Task 5 independent speaking

 Task 5 independent speaking

Hey Ben, my professor just asked if I knew a couple of people who could help out at a conference next Monday and Tuesday for $100 per day. What do you think? Want to do it with me?

Next Monday or Tuesday? That's a shame, but I don't think I can. I already agreed to volunteer at a student orientation session both days.

Why don't you see if you could volunteer at the student orientation on just one of the days? That would mean you could work at the conference the other day.

The money sure would be useful, but I don't want to let people down. I know they've had a couple of other volunteers drop out recently and I don't want to do the same.

Well then. What about explaining the situation to the people organizing the orientation and seeing if they could pay you for your time? You might not get 100 per day, even a smaller sin would be better than nothing, right?

That's a good idea, but the person in charge keeps complaining about how small his budget for the event is.

The man has a problem because he volunteered at one orientation so he cannot work at a conference. The speakers discuss a couple of possible solutions to this problem. In my view, the man should speak to the organizer of the student orientation and try to get paid for his time. The main reason is that even though the recent budget is small, he might get some money. In contrast, I don't think he should drop out as a volunteer. This is because other people have dropped out and the man does not want to do the same thing.

Practice

Hi james. Everything ok?

Oh, hi  Maria. I’ve got midterms on Friday, and I agreed to join a review session with a couple of classmates on Thursday. But I’ve just learned that one of my professors has organized a field trip on the same day.

So you are not sure whether to go on the field trip or join the study session?

right. I considered asking my friends to do a study session on Wednesday, not Thursday, but I know they'd both need to miss classes in order to do that.

Well. there'll be other field trips later in the year, wont three? You could join the study session this time and go on the next field trip.

Hmm… it's worth thinking about, but this field trip is to a place I'd really like to visit. It's really unlikely my professor will arrange another field trip to the same place.

The man’s problem is that a study session and field trip are at the same time.

hi , Kate, how are things with you?

Hey Dan. Professor Camilleri has asked if I want to help her with some research until the end of the semester. I'd love to do it, as it would be a great experience for the future, but it will take a lot of time, and I'm not sure I’ll be able to stay on top of my assignments If I say yes.

You have a part time job as well, right?

That's right, I work at a fitness center in the evenings.

Well, could you quit that job? That would free up some time, right?

Yeah, I’ve considered it, but the fitness center job pays pretty well and I can't really afford to give it up.

Well, could you do only some of the research for your professor and have someone else do the rest?

You mean, see if Professor Camilleri would be willing to work with two research assistants?

Yeah, that way you'd have time for your school work and part time job, and still have time to help your professor with her research.

That's an option, I guess. I'll have to think about it more, though.

The speakers discuss two possible solutions to a problem. Describe the problem. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and why.

Hi Eric. Are you ready for our study group session with Sam, Carla, and Peter?

Yes, uh, actually, I don't know.

What do you mean?

Well, I did the reading I was supposed to do, but the other people in the group know so much about the subject that I’ve lost my confidence. I'm not sure I add anything that Sam, Carla, and Peter don't already know.

Wow, I feel exactly the same way. The other three studied this subject matter last semester, too, so they know a lot more than I do. I try to do the work, but I feel like I'm holding them back.

I kind of wish I had joined a different group, you know?

Could we do that? Join a different group, I mean? I'm sure there are some study groups with people like us who didn't study the subject last semester.

It’s kind of late in the semester to join a different group, but we could ask around. We'd also have to make sure the professor doesn't mind.. You know, another option might be to split off and form our own group.

Just the two of us?

Yeah, I think we work pretty well together, and we seem to have about the same level of knowledge.

Well, it would mean a lot of hard work to complete our project in time, but it might be possible. And I'm sure Sam, Carla and Peter wouldn't mind.

Professor Braun, do you have a minute? I want to talk to you about next month’s field trip to Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

Hi, Sandy. Sure, come in, is there a problem?

Well, I know the field trip is a requirement of the class, but I grew up in Carlsbad and often went to the National Park with my family. I also went there on two study trips when I was in high school, so I know the place pretty well. I'm worried that I won't learn anything new on the field trip.

I see. Hmmm. you know, we don't normally do this, but I could speak with Professor Jenkins and arrange for you to join her group’s field to Rock Hound State Park.

That might be Ok, I guess, but I wouldn't know anyone in her group.

Well, a field trip is required, so you have to go on one.  Guess the only other option would be for you to do an independent field trip.

You mean, go somewhere on my own and do independent field research?

Yes, is that something you would feel comfortable doing?

My father’s interested in geology, so he might be able to take time off work and come with me. I'd have to call him to check, though.

Try and let me know your final decision within the next couple of days, Ok?
